Our November 26 auction including a superb connoisseur collection turned out to be one of our best ever, the live online auction had originally been planned to take place back in May, we felt it was the right call to postpone it until the market stabilised following the announcement of the pandemic in March. It tuned out to be a wise move because in the intervening period many additional poster were consigned, and buyer's confidence had not been damaged by the lockdowns and closure of room auctions. In fact the success of the auction showed that collectors had more time to enjoy browsing and bidding online.
A great number of clients registered to bid as well as many leaving commission bids on many of the lots on offer. During the live event we had in many instances several bidders on each lot, this did slow proceedings down but made for an exciting few hours as lot after lot was snapped up, many exceeding expectations. The single owner collection made in excess of £200,000 including the premium. Great prices were achieved for so many, here are some of the most notable railway poster By Night Train to Scotland LNER by Zec £20,500, Nord Express by Cassandre £11,000.
A good number of the Skiing posters were sold within estimate, Swiss resorts bringing the stroungest prices, Hilde Smith's Harald & H.J. Smith Ski Fabrik, St Moritz of 1905 at £2,100, and Wilhelm Friedrich Burger's Engadiner Skirenen St. Moritz of 1914 made £4,000. Amongst other notable posters from the special collection were the William McDowell giant Cunard White Star hoarding poster for RMS Queen Mary selling to a French dealer for £9,800, Pierre Zenobel's Blue Train to the Cote d'Azur 1928 sold for £3,100, Jules-Alexandre Grun's Monaco 1905 £3,950.
There were so many great posters in the auction from other vendors, some are worth mentioning John Gilroy's Dig for Plenty Guinness for Strength at £750, MacDonald Gill's Mail Steamship Route's GPO £1,600, H. S. Williamson's Loading Mails Croydon Airport 1934, and Docks 1934 £1,450 and £1,000 respectively. Some late entry American World War I posters did very well, all in exceptional condition, worth recording is Howard Chandler Christy's 1 want you for the Navy which sold for £1,025.
